The plantation of our ancestors
In the eight-part podcast series “De plantage van onze voorouders” (“The plantation of our ancestors”), Maartje Duin (Branch A) investigates traces of the slavery past in her family history.
Maartje discovers that her ancestor Antonia van Lynden – van der Heim (Branch A) was, in 1863, co-owner of the sugar plantation Tout Lui Faut in Suriname, and seeks contact with the descendants of the enslaved: the Bouva family. Together with Peggy Bouva she reconstructs the story of the plantation.
They dive into archives, speak to their relatives and, in Suriname, visit the remains of the Tout Lui Faut plantation. It leads to all kinds of new questions: whose past is this? Who feels the consequences in the present? And can Peggy and Maartje arrive at a shared story?
