Allard Philip van der Borch, Lord of Langentrier in Westphalia, delegate of the Council of State, marries the unyielding Reinira Charlotte van Goltstein on 19 January 1734 in Zutphen. Although Allard has interests in the Ommelanden (Groningen) and his bride moves to those parts, Reinira does not thrive with cousin Van Linteloo, where she stays while Van der Borch lingers in The Hague. When her first child is on the way, Reinira persuades her husband to return to Zutphen so that she can give birth to her son there. Van der Borch, unsuspecting, agrees; Reinira has no intention of ever returning to the Ommelanden. De Sterkste follows the story of the fortunes of Reinira, her family, the financial troubles a family of standing has to face, Reinira’s prestige but also her decline after the death of Van der Borch until her own death. It is under Reinira’s watchful eye that the Van der Borch family purchases Huis Verwolde in order to provide son Fritz with an income.

Shortly after the owner and resident of Vorden Castle, Willem François Emile baron Van der Borch tot Verwolde, lord of Vorden, built a house on the mound (bult) near his castle in 1925, the local district nurse ended her post. She left her rented room and went to live on De Bult as a guesthouse keeper. With that, in the Achterhoek “village of eight castles”, fuel was added to a suspicion already five years old about a special relationship between her and that baron.
